RIINA - WONDER WOMEN - The WAU Project
" Wonder Women - The WAU Project was born from my own desire to do something good with my art. Women's rights are very close to my heart and I wanted to find a way to empower and encourage women to find the belief in themselves. For months I worked on this project in my mind, looked for different kinds of women to model for me, selected the background kangas and designed the paintings. The whole project has been the centre of my attention. I've got to paint some amazing women, experienced surprising coincidences and heard unbelievable stories. These artworks have been created through these unique moments. I've got to witness how much strength us women have.
A month before the exhibition I was still thinking about one piece, I couldn't decide what kind of woman would be a perfect fit for it. Then a dear friend of mine challenged me - ' Paint yourself, be an example, show that you love yourself, stand behind the message of your project and prove how you can make impossible possible if you just believe and want it'.
My first reaction was that painting myself with camouflage technique to blend into the background with a complicated pattern like this is indeed impossible. Because of the background I couldn't paint in front of the mirror so the process would be even more difficult, and painting with my left hand is too demanding as well. However, I suppose my friend knew me better than I did myself and guessed I'd end up trying out even the most impossible idea.
One long day, paints and myself. Trial and error, willpower and swearwords, cold sweat and feelings of succeeding. And this is the result - I proved myself that I am the same kind of wonder woman as all these other women in this project. I wish everyone could experience this feeling.
I am grateful for this journey."
